WonkyLemur's New England Webcomics Weekend Post!

Okay, so this was demanded by absolutely no one. Whatever.

Anyway.

Last Saturday my husband and I trekked alllll the way to Easthampton, MA for NEWW.  Exciting!  I was really looking forward to meeting some of my favorite artists, and nervous that I was going to make a complete ass of myself because I am intensely socially inept.  Luckily for me, many webcomic artists are also shy and socially inept.  The folks were all very nice--I got a hug from my doppelganger Sara McHenry, discussed cat flatulence with Danielle Corsetto, did not get stabbed by Jeph Jacques, and made John Allison laugh talking about turning my livingroom shelves into a giant Tetris game.  I also got to hang out with my Baby Brother Billy Barth and some friends on Saturday, which was awesome.

In MUCH MORE UPLIFTING news, Olmos Productions Inc. has donated their share of the profits from the “Team Edward [James Olmos] Shirts” to Doctors Without Borders. The first donation was $1153 and their will be more donations to charity as long as we continue to sell the shirts. I am so happy that creating that silly T-Shirt resulted people in desperate need receiving life saving help, even if it was just a small amount.

 

Team Edward is awesome.

Creative frustration builds character. Or not.

So I'm trying to design a race of felinoid beings who live in the world I created for my fantasy-adventure novel that's been un-worked-on for several years.  They've gone through so many changes over the years, from basically looking like Thundercats to having animal heads to things in between.  I've been going bonkers over the last few days trying to come up with a workable design, even going to far as to design a skeletal structure.  Don't ask me why it's so important to me to have an anatomically workable design for a race of make-believe people for a story that won't have any illustrations.  I couldn't tell you.  However, what I'm trying to work out is a felinoid who would be able to speak human (or elven, or dwarven) languages, which would rule out a purely feline skull structure (sorry, furries).

And damn it if they don't keep turning into Na'vi.

Hence the going BONKERS.  Every time I come up with something that I think would work I realize it's a frakkin Na'vi.  Every time I try to back away from that very recognizable design I get something that's too animalistic for speech capability.

I suppose in the end I'll have to count on the differences (have fur, are NOT blue, are not a "primitive" and oppressed native people) to save the day.  Well, that and the fact that these drawings are really for my own reference anyway and will probably never see the light of day.
