Or Twi-moms, or whatever the hell they are. I haven't been sucked into the vortex myself, so pardon me if I'm not all down with the lingo.
First off, yes, I think it's ridiculous. I admire the beauty of virile youth as much as anyone, but I prefer to keep a lid on it and admire quietly. Just sayin'.
So there was a picture on a blog somewhere, most likely one of the offspring of I Can Has Cheezburger, that showed a bunch of grown women going all Beatlemania over Twilight. I assume it was a showing of New Moon, or an appearance of the male stars thereof. The text added below the photo stated that if this were a crowd of 40-year-old men screaming for a 17-year-old girl, someone would call the police.
At the time, I laughed. "Oh, guffaw, 'tis funny because 'tis true!" And a rueful headshake at society and its silly double standards.
I've come to feel, however, that there is a reason that society has these double standards. By and large, women are a prey species.* A 40-something woman is far less likely to have the urge** or the ability to rape a teenage boy, beat him to within an inch of his life, and leave him for dead in a ditch. This difference, for me, at least, adds a frightening underlying aspect to men--especially in "packs"--ogling women that just isn't there when the roles are reversed. It's a group of Thompson's gazelles stalking a male lion. Not that threatening, perhaps kinda cute, and certainly silly.
So. Just a mentally random, randomly mental, thought for you today.

Now obviously my own experiences (which do not include being beaten nearly to death and left in a ditch, thankfully) have colored my perceptions. I only have my own perceptions to work with, hey? It's how these things work.
* Yes, I know that some women could kick the shit out of a man if necessary, whether they are larger than he is or not.
** No, I do not believe that all men everywhere have to constantly suppress the urge to rape and/or pillage.
